I have read hundreds of life coaching books. Reading can be inspiring, illuminating and life changing, but only if you put it all in to practice. Reading alone wont change you. Just like the articles and courses on offer in this website. I didn't write just for you to read. I encourage you to take action.
I remember when I first started out on this journey as a young martial arts enthusiast. I was never the fittest, the strongest or the fastest so I needed a different edge. I needed knowledge.
I wanted to learn about correct technique.
I wanted to know about the art and performance of set routines.
I wanted to learn about optimising vitality and wellbeing.
And of course I wanted to be like Bruce Lee!
Have you heard practice makes perfect? It doesn't. That was a lie. Practice makes permanent. If you always do what you always did you will get the same results. If you practice a technique and your technique is out, even minutely you will never achieve the best results. However, if you slow down the move, perfect the timing, position, accuracy, and so on, and then practice you may just hit the jackpot once you put in the hours.
I found a phenomenal book that cleared this right up. "Zen In The Martial Arts" by Joe Hyams. It's only a small book, with short chapters. But man did it packed a punch. I was still in my late teens when reading was either about a subject I was studying or maybe it was Stephen King book. I had never read a book that would fundamentally change the way I thought. This book did.
Books make you a better student. You don't read a book about martial arts and become a better martial artist. You have to put in the work. You don't read a book about electricity and suddenly become an electrician. That could be shocking.
Some books make you a better student of yourself.
Do you have a passion for personal development? Let me share some of my favourite life coaching books that absolutely changed my destiny:
1. Influence: The Power Of Persuasion - Robert Cialdini
2. Atomic Habits - James Clear
3. Seven Habits of Highly Effective People - Stephen Covey
4. Quiet Leadership - David Rock
5. Awaken the Giant Within - Anthony Robbins
6. The Compound Effect - Darren Hardy
7. The Prosperous Coach - Rich Litvin
8. Effective Coaching Lessons from the Coaches Coach
9. Learned Optimism - Martin Seligman
10. Questions are the answer - Allan Pease
Robert Cialdini's mind blowing book on Influence: The Power Of Persuasion lifted so many veils for me! I can remember coming into the Christmas period and all I wanted was to get my hands on the latest toy for my boy. Could I find it?Absolutely not.
It wasn't until I read this book that I realised it was designed that way! Never again would I trust the marketing guru's and their weapons of influence.
You need to read this book and learn the six principles of persuasion:
2. Commitment and Consistency
3. Social Proof
If I do this, will you do that. Look its no secret. If I give you my ultimate guide to goal setting will you take advantage of my Life Coaching Insights newsletter? It's the same principle.
2. Commitment and Consistency
Stick with what you already know, do and behave. If you are an impulsive buyer, you will click the buy now button. If you are more reserved you might click the "more info" link. Neither makes a difference. They all follow the path laid out.
3. Social Proof
Where ever the busiest store, bar, or restaurant is, that's where the flock will gravitate towards. Whatever most of the herd are doing, the rest will follow.
Authority comes from expertise, experience, exposure. But it also comes from visual stimulus. "Trust the science" is trying to assert this weapon of influence over you. People respond differently to the crisp white coat and stethoscope look. Although that stereotype is worn out now some people still suffer from white coat syndrome. It has that much influence over them. Trust the weapon of influence known as authority at your expense. Did you ever hear the phrase "Buyer Beware?"
There is no surprise that you will be more easily influenced by someone you like, or who is like you. Rapport plays an important part. Cialdini makes reference to the "halo effect." Another way you could look at this is "sex sells." If you feel physically attracted towards someone who is offering you their merchandise be aware that physically attractive people have a much better ability to persuade us. Did you really need, or even want the product?
Perhaps the most commonly seen weapon of influence is scarcity. Buy now before its gone. Dont miss out. Last few remaining. Anyone who is selling anything will use scarcity to persuade you to purchase.
I am a sole trader so if you want to take advantage of a free life coaching consultation there are limited appointments available. It couldn't be any other way. If I filled my diary with free consultations I would have no time left to earn a living.
Not all scarcity signs are as genuine. Remember the Christmas toy I mentioned earlier? This is the trick they use against us, all the time.
Whilst the title suggests that this is a book about Habits, it could easily have been written as Seven Principles.
I get it that "The Seven Habits of Highly Effective People" might be marmite kind of book. It's big. It took me a couple of reads before I really got into the message. I knew one or two people who gave up part way through. But I am absolutely recommending this book on my "Top Ten Life Coaching Books That Changed My Destiny" list. I wouldn't be without it.
This life coaching book has been a massive inspiration for me. It's still on my bookshelf to this day and very dog eared from repeated readings. In fact, not much will happen without me thinking about one of the seven principles.
I first picked this up in a charity shop for next to nothing. I loved the book so much I gave that copy away but then kicked myself. So I went out and bought a new copy. It's that good.
Stephen Covey - Inspiration and life guide. 1932-2012.

Put first things first
Seek first to understand, then be understood
Sharpen the saw

4. Neville Goddard
5. Tony Buzan
6. Marianne Williamson
7. Wayne Dyer

10. The Arbinger Institute
Have you, like me, spent hours and hours in the self help section of your favourite bookstore, or library just looking for something that could help you break through?
There are so many themes, authors, and titles to choose from aren't there? Perhaps too many.
Im not kidding there are literally thousands of life coaching books now! Authors from all over the globe too. Who do you pick to walk the next few steps with?
Are you the kind of person who will read a book and if it makes sense to you, will want to put the principles into practice right away?
My top ten life coaching books below are ones that I have read more than once and had the greatest impact for me. These are great books that I would have absolutely no hesitation in recommending. Books that when you read, I would start putting the learning into practice.
After all, a great book is written by an author who has invested time and energy in studying so they can present the information to you. Reading a good book saves you time, because you don't have to study the history, the art, the science. You just adopt the principles and habits.
These are life changing books that will transform not only your relationship, but your career, your finances, your health and your life.
Health, Wealth, and Relationships, are the route to your life's greatest fulfilment.
Some people say knowledge is power, but they are missing the point. Knowledge alone isn't power. First of you have to have a reason for seeking knowledge. This is your "purpose", or your "why." Knowledge without purpose is like a vehicle without fuel. Where is going to take you? Not far!
What will you do with the knowledge once you have it? Take massive action! Action, based on correct knowledge is power. If you are reading self help books looking for answers you might fall into the same trap you've been in time and again. Your seeking merely to understand, not transform. That is teaching, not life coaching.
If you take "A Course In Miracles" for example. Just trying to read it to gain information will get you nowhere. It is a "course" for a reason. You are directed to take action, even if only in your thought's. If you change your thoughts you can change your behaviour which will change your life. The is the true power of life coaching books.
Guys, if you are a new father, or expecting to be soon, this book is essential reading. Ladies, get this for your man. This was given to me as a gift I will always be grateful for it.
Never mind turning your life upside down by introducing a newborn into your relationship. This book will ease away any doubt that you are about to embark on a magical journey.
This is not only one of the shortest relationship books I have ever read, it would count as one of my favourite personal development books too.
The Sixty Minute Father is easy to read and will have you laughing out loud, and crying in equal quantity. There are some truly memorable and hilarious moments Rob finds himself in. And when you have your hands full, the beauty is, you might even complete the whole book in about 60 minutes too!
Get this, and get it for anyone else you know who is about to become dad!
Hope you enjoyed this top ten list of life coaching books. Drop me a line and let me know if you think there should be more and why they absolutely should be included.
To your success!
