The butterflys breakthrough is a classic tale. The story teaches us that sometimes, tough times are just as important to our personal growth as the moments of sheer ecstasy. The struggle is actually a critical part of our lives. To use a different metaphor, you cant make a diamond without extreme pressure.
A little boy was playing in his garden and found a caterpillar. He decided to keep it and promised his mother he would take care of it.
One day the caterpillar climbed up the stick and started acting strangely. His mother explained that the caterpillar was creating a cocoon and was going through a metamorphosis to become a butterfly. He was thrilled and excited to hear about the changes his caterpillar would go through. He watched every day, eager for the butterfly to emerge.
Then, a tiny hole appeared in the cocoon and the butterfly began its struggle to break free from it's cocoon.
At first the boy was excited, but he became concerned because the butterfly was struggling so hard to get out. It couldn’t break free! It looked like it was making no progress! It looked desperate inside its own cocoon!
The boy desperately wanting to help got scissors, and made the hole a tiny bit bigger and the butterfly was free! The boy was mesmerised.
Its body was swollen and its wings small and shrivelled. The boy watched hoping the butterflies wings would dry out and stretch wide. But the butterfly could only crawl and very soon died with it's swollen body and shrivelled wings.
It never was able to fly…
Heartbroken the boy went to talk to a science teacher. He learned that the butterfly's struggle to push its way through the tiny opening of the cocoon pushes the fluid out of its body and into its wings. The butterfly was supposed to struggle. In fact, without the struggle, the butterfly would never, ever fly.
Who would ever have dreamt the transformation from caterpillar to butterfly was possible if we didnt already know it to be true.
How does one become a butterfly? You have to want to fly so much, you are willing to give up being a caterpillar.
Nobody enjoys struggle. But without struggle, how would we ever grow? Strong winds make strong trees.
The times of great adversity are when we truly dig deep and tap into resources we never knew we had. You are about to have a breakthrough if you can recognise the opportunity for you to grow.
In life we don't always get what we want do we, but we usually get what we need, and don't even realise it. When life throws you lemons, make lemonade.
If you were to pray for courage for example, you don't just wake up feeling courageous. You find yourself amidst situations where you need courage to move forward.
If you were to pray for more wisdom, you are given opportunities to work your way out of crisis.
If you pray for more love, you are presented opportunities to express your love.
